Gods with amnesia: subterranean worlds of inner earth

By Sepehr, Robert

Publishing Date: [2016]

Classification: 500

Call Number: 577.584 SEP

"The idea that our planet consists of a hollow, or honeycombed, interior is not new. Some of the oldest cultures speak of civilizations inside of vast cavern-cities, within the bowels of the earth. According to certain Buddhist and Hindu traditions, secret tunnels connect Tibet with a subterranean paradise, and they call this legendary underworld Agartha. In India, this underground oasis is best known by its Sanskrit name, Shambhala, thought to mean 'place of tranquility.' Mythologies throughout the world, from South America to the Arctic, describe numerous entrances to these fabled inner kingdoms. Many occult organizations, esoteric authors, and secret societies concur with these myths and legends of subterranean inhabitants, who are the remnants of antediluvian civilizations, which sought refuge in hollow caverns inside the earth. Assuming that the myths are true, and the Earth is partially hollow, how could life survive underground? How would organisms receive the ventilation required to breathe miles below the surface? What would provide the light needed to see, or to cause the photosynthesis necessary for the plant life that allegedly exists in these inner worlds? Are there any known sources of sustenance available that could provide for a large human population? What evidence is there that a sustainable biosphere could exist miles below the surface, totally isolated from the nourishment and the established life cycle provided by the sun? Where are the entrances to inner earth, and which races live there? Author and anthropologist, Robert Sepehr, explores these questions and attempts to unlock their riddles, which have eluded any serious consideration in mainstream academia"--Amazon

Beloved beasts: fighting for life in an age of extinction

By Nijhuis, Michelle

Publishing Date: [2021]

Classification: 500

Call Number: 591.68 NIJ

"A vibrant history of the modern conservation movement-told through the lives and ideas of the people who built it. In the late nineteenth century, as humans came to realize that our rapidly industrializing and globalizing societies were driving other animal species to extinction, a movement to protect and conserve them was born. In Beloved Beasts, acclaimed science journalist Michelle Nijhuis traces the movement's history: from early battles to save charismatic species such as the American bison and bald eagle to today's global effort to defend life on a larger scale. She describes the vital role of scientists and activists such as Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson as well as lesser-known figures in conservation history; she reveals the origins of vital organizations like the Audubon Society and the World Wildlife Fund; she explores current efforts to protect species such as the whooping crane and the black rhinoceros; and she confronts the darker side of conservation, long shadowed by racism and colonialism. As the destruction of other species continues and the effects of climate change escalate, Beloved Beasts charts the ways conservation is becoming a movement for the protection of all species-including our own"--

Keeping the bees: why all bees are at risk and what we can do to save them

By Packer, Laurence Dennis Marchant

Publishing Date: 2014

Classification: 500

Call Number: 595.799 PAC

"From the jungles of South America to the deserts of Arizona, one thing remains consistent: bees are disappearing. A world without bees would be much less colourful, with fewer flowers. But that's not all-bees are responsible for up to one-third of our food supply, and the consequences of not taking action to protect them are frightening. While the media focuses on colony-collapse disorder and the threats to honey bees specifically, the real danger is much greater: all bees are at risk, whether it be from loss of habitat, pesticide use or disease, among other factors. And because of the integral role these insects play in the ecology of our planet, we may be at risk as well. In Keeping the Bees, Laurence Packer, a melittologist whose life revolves around bees, debunks many myths about these creatures and takes us behind the scenes with scientists around the world who are working to save these fascinating creatures before it's too late."--Publisher description.

Super gut: a four-week plan to reprogram your microbiome, restore health, and lose weight

By Davis, William

Publishing Date: 2022

Classification: 600

Call Number: 612.32 DAV

"Bestselling author of the Wheat Belly franchise brings his next big, game changing idea - the human microbiome and the silent epidemic of SIBO - to the mainstream. There have been other bestselling microbiome books and people think they understand it, but the research is constantly evolving and growing. Dr. Davis has connected the dots between "gut health" and many common, modern ailments and complaints that other books in this category have not, which gives this the potential to be the breakthrough microbiome book. For example, while we are one of the only mainstream publishers with a SIBO book coming out, most are independently published and most doctors are not yet familiar with the term. Dr. Davis is saying that 1 out of 3 people have SIBO, which causes a long list of health issues and illnesses; he sees it as a silent and profound epidemic created by the absence of microbial species that our ancestors had even 50-100 years ago and have been erased by the industrialization of food and medicine. Dr. Davis has also found that patients with dementia have fungi on their brain-SIFO-that has traveled upwards from the intestinal tract! Reprogramming the microbiome based on his research and techniques not only gets to the root of many diseases but also improves levels of oxytocin (the bonding/happy hormone), brain health, and promotes anti-aging and weight loss. He has also found that a small, hand-held device that attaches to your phone can help you measure/diagnose whether or not you have SIBO. All of this is new(s) and the book provides not just the science and case studies but also the recipes and solutions. In this book, he intends to help readers understand the science, diagnose it, eradicate it, and maintain their long term health"--

Semiconductors and the information revolution: magic crystals that made IT happen

By Orton, J. W

Publishing Date: 2009

Classification: 600

Call Number: 621.3815 ORT

This book sets out to explain the development of modern electronic systems and devices from the viewpoint of the semiconductor materials (germanium, silicon, gallium arsenide and many others) which made them possible. It covers the scientific understanding of these materials and its intimate relationship with their technology and many applications. It began with Michael Faraday, took off in a big way with the invention of the transistor at Bell Labs in 1947 and is still burgeoning today. It is a story to match any artistic or engineering achievement of man and this is the first time it has been presented in a style suited to the non-specialist. It is written in a lively, non-mathematical style which brings out the excitement of discovery and the fascinating interplay between the demands of system pull and technological push. It also looks at the nature of some of the personal interactions which helped to shape the modern technological world. An introductory chapter illustrates just how dependent we are on modern electronic systems and explains the significance of semiconductors in their development. It also provides, in as painless a way as possible, a necessary understanding of semiconductor properties in relation to these applications. The second chapter takes up the historical account and ends with some important results emerging from the Second World War - including its effect on the organisation of scientific research. Chapter three describes the world-shaking discovery of the transistor and some of the early struggles to make it commercially viable, including the marketing of the first transistor radio. In chapter four we meet the integrated circuit which gave shape to much of our modern life in the form of the personal computer (and which gave rise to a famously long-running patent war!). Later chapters cover the application of compound semiconductors to light-emitting devices, such as LEDs and lasers, and light detecting devices such as photocells. We learn how these developments led to the invention of the CD player and DVD recorder, how other materials were applied to the development of sophisticated night vision equipment, fibre optical communications systems, solar photovoltaic panels and flat panel displays. Similarly, microwave techniques essential to our modern day love of mobile phoning are seen to depend on clever materials scientists who, not for the first time, "invented" new semiconductors with just the right properties. Altogether, it is an amazing story and one which deserves to be more widely known. Read this book and you will be rewarded with a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the technological revolution which shapes so many aspects of our lives. - A historical account of the development of semiconductor physics, devices and applications from the nineteenth century to the present day - Coverage of the importance of material quality and it's relation to the physics of the devices - Presented in a strictly non-mathematical and anecedotal way, to appeal to a wide audience - Provides the broad sweep of science history.
